A legacy indeed! The Millers……thank you very much for sharing you and your brothers story behind a teacher and mostly a father who had the gift of music! I’ve had the privilege of watching and hearing your father played at my grandmother’s bar in Pago (Island Moon Bar) during his many visits during Easter holiday. He would jam with the late Tavita Bourne either on guitar or his saxophone and sing! He’s a very passionate and discipline master musician………a legacy and pioneer indeed! My highest respect to your father (Willie Miller) RIP and your brother (Harry Miller) RIP. Also to you Latu Miller and your brother Maua MIller! May our Lord continue to bless you and the entire Miller families! With much respect and alofas, Jr.

Malo lava le soifua ia oe lau Afioga! I sang with Harry many, many years ago when he was the lead guitarist for the Rainmaker Hotel band, along with Lui Tuitavuki and his family members. One memory I have in particular was having to learn the song Stardust, which was really my first jazz song ever. I had a hard time memorizing the melody, mainly because I waited until the last minute and was unprepared for all the chromaticism and chord changes. I had never heard a melody like that before. In any event, Harry and the drummer pretty much played that song all by themselves, as the bassist and rhythm guitarist were, similarly, unprepared for that tune as well. In hindsight, I remember the look on Harry’s face: He enjoyed a break from the norm, playing a more complex, jazz tune like that, as opposed to the simpler stuff (eg. country, pop, island) that we usually played. He did his best to shout the chord changes to the other musicians as we went through, but by the middle of the song, we were all just content to just listen to Harry play the song in his own unique and beautiful way, while I followed him as best I could for dear life. Hang on tight, keep singing, and have fun….I’ll always take those memories of Harry’s beautiful tone, sound, and touch wherever I go. I was so sad to hear of his passing. Thank you for this beautiful website and the chance to pay my respects in my own small way. Many alofas from the mainland, and much, much gratitude to you and the entire Miller clan, ai maise le Afioga o Willie, for your musical contributions and influences in both Samoas to this day.

Latu, I started to write something when Catherine first posted about the website and got all teary then gave up. As I’m writing this I’m playing the Miller Brothers CD and enjoying the great selection, knowing also that some of the songs on that album were from your recordings on a cassette player during the Tanoa days. Tasi’s son Alfred was listening to the CD and said I really want to play like Papa, but I don’t think I’ll ever be as quick as him in changing the chords. Alfred’s been asking how old Papa was when he started playing the guitar – 14? That’s what Harry had said. When Harry was playing the guitar at Maua and Josie’s maybe about a month before he left us, I asked if he still played the same as before he fell ill. Certainly when you boys were jamming at the Avondale get-together and at Johnny’s he sounded the same. He said that his fingers were too slow doing what his brain was telling them to. Kalofa e, Harry not only had a gift for music, he had a gift for being succinct. E tuai ga fai e lima mea la e fai atu le faiai e fai. I can get side-tracked here and list his other original sayings. Latu, thank you very much for this treasure. Mum and Dad will be so proud and your brother will probably have an apt phrase to sum up his feelings about your efforts. The Blacksand cover, I can’t stop listening to it. You guys rocked it out. I still cherished the memory of playing bass with you and my dad on guitar, uncle Maua on keys, and Pa singing. It was at aunty Jeanette unveiling. I was fortunate enough to do the same thing at Pa’s 70th b-day.

This is a fantastic website. It is such an honor for me to know Harry’s sons Will and Leon. From day 1 I knew they were extremely talented but never realized the depth of their musical education until I was introduced to the Miller brothers music. Through talks with Will and Leon I learned how amazingly supportive Harry was and also how he helped groom 2 of the best musicians I have the pleasure of knowing and the great honor of playing music with. It is wonderful to read about the family history of my musical mates. To see that their talents stem not just from practice and experience but also that it runs in their blood. Leon is an outstanding guitarist. I love to hear him play. He has the jazz feel down. Sweeping chords sweet sounding melodic lines. Will, one of my influences as a bass player, never ceases to amaze me. He can hold the groove in a pocket as a bass player, is fantastic on guitar, and I had the pleasure of being in a band with him as he soared and honed his talents as a keyboardist. Thank you for this in depth look into the history of my friends family and the links to all the wonderful music from their teachers. I only wish I could have lived in Samoa to be able to live with the music in the moment.. God Bless The Miller’s. All of you

How very interesting to read about Harry Miller and his music. He was my granddaughters grandfather, Leon and Kim’s daughters. I only wish the girls could of met him. Hopefully they will meet Grandma Monica in the near future. Love their music, hope our girls take after their Dad and Grandpa.
